Frequently Asked
Questions
What happens in a class?
Please read the
Class
Overview page.
What should I wear to class?
Please wear
something comfortable and which you can move around in. For most
classes, a t-shirt and a pair of joggers are ideal, along with a jumper
you can put on if you get cold. If your class is a Dynamic class, you
will benefit from lighter clothing, but bring a jumper to cover up
afterwards.
What should I bring to class?
• Yoga Mat - if
you do not have one, then please bring a large, clean towel or blanket
for your first class instead. If you decide to commit to the classes,
then please consider purchasing your own non-slip yoga mat. I
can order them for
you so please feel free to ask.
• Blanket - or warm
clothing, for relaxation
Do I
need to book my class place?
For some classes, this is essential - otherwise you may be refused entry
if the class is full! Please check out the Adult Class page for
specific information on your class, and if in any doubt, please get in
touch to make sure you're not disappointed.
Should I eat something before class?
Try not to eat a large meal just before class, allow it to take
some time to digest so that it will not make you feel uncomfortable. If
you haven't eaten for 4 hours or more, then please have a snack/light
meal before you come to class to make sure you have enough energy for
the postures.
Can I still do Yoga even if I'm not very flexible?
Yes - in fact, most of us do Yoga to improve flexibility! Each posture
has several different modifications, so don't worry. You will get a lot
of benefit from your practice and soon start to get more flexibility.
Will Yoga help me to tone up?
Yes, Yoga will help to stretch and strengthen your muscles
and give you much better posture.
Will Yoga help me to lose weight?
The answer here depends on -
•
The cause of your weight problem
•
The type of Yoga you do
•
How much you practice!
Developing a regular practice (at least 3 times a week if possible) of
Yoga at a level which challenges you will help, more so if combined with
a sensible diet. If you have any questions, please get in touch or catch
me after a class and I can explain in more detail.
What style of Yoga do you teach?
Please see my
Yoga Styles page.
What if I have a medical concern?
If you have any health problems or medical concerns (even if you
think it is not going to affect you in your yoga class), please let me
know before you start the class - you can come a few minutes early and
let me know or you can
get in touch
before you arrive. I would also advise you to contact your GP before you
come along. In most cases, the postures can simply be modified for your
comfort and safety.
I'm pregnant - can I come to your class?
Yoga can be very beneficial for mums-to-be and baby too - speak to your
GP or midwife and read below for guidelines on yoga in pregnancy
-
If you are:
Pregnant and do not regularly do yoga or have
never done it before
First 14 weeks - Do not practice yoga postures (asanas) at this
time. Spend your time resting, or researching yoga classes in your area.
After 14 weeks - You can begin a gentle yoga practice, so look
for a specialist Pregnancy Yoga class near you (please check the
Class Timetable or get in touch with Laura for a recommendation). If
there is not one available near you, find a gentle yoga class and speak
to your teacher before you attend. Your posture work will need to be
modified to accommodate your pregnancy body as a whole - not just the
bump!
Pregnant and practice yoga regularly
First 14 weeks - It is recommended that you do not practice yoga
postures (asanas) at this time. Work on the other aspects of your
practice, such as breathing, meditation and relaxation. Practice
non-attachment to your physical practice. If you are a regular student
of mine, you are welcome to continue to come to class for breathing and
relaxation.
After 14 weeks - You can return to a (modified) practice, so
either speak to your regular teacher about returning to class or look
for a specialist Pregnancy Yoga class near you
(I can
recommend a
teacher in the Hinckley/Nuneaton area).
Your posture work will need to be modified to accommodate your pregnancy
body as a whole and not just the bump!
I want
to get rid of my old mat - what can I do?
• Donate it to your yoga
charity club or local fitness centre
• Donate it to the homeless shelter where people can continue to use and
enjoy the comfort of the yoga mat
• Use it as a non-slippery surface between the floor and your carpet
• Give it to your pet dog or cat to sleep on
